Rural Transport in Northamptonshire

At Northamptonshire ACRE, we understand that reliable transport is essential for people living in rural areas. Whether it’s getting to medical appointments, shopping, work, or social activities, having access to transport can make a significant difference in people’s lives. Unfortunately, with limited public transport options in many rural communities, it can be challenging for residents to travel independently.

That’s why we support and promote community transport schemes across the county, helping to ensure that everyone has access to affordable and convenient transport options. Community transport initiatives provide a lifeline to many individuals who would otherwise struggle with isolation or difficulty in accessing essential services. These services are often run by volunteers or local organisations, demonstrating the power of community spirit in Northamptonshire.

Community Transport Directory

Every January, Northamptonshire ACRE publishes the Community Transport Directory, a comprehensive guide to transport services available across the county. This directory provides up-to-date information on community-run transport schemes, volunteer driver services, and other essential travel options designed to support rural residents.

The Community Transport Directory is a vital resource for those who may not have access to a car or reliable public transport. It includes details of:

  • Community bus services
  • Volunteer car schemes
  • Accessible transport options for those with mobility needs
  • Dial-a-Ride services
  • Social car schemes providing transport for medical appointments and essential trips
  • Minibus services catering to rural areas

By using this directory, you can find local transport services that can help you stay connected and mobile. Many of these services are run by dedicated volunteers and charities, ensuring affordability and accessibility for those in need.

Volunteer

Many community transport schemes across the county are in desperate need of volunteer drivers to help provide essential transport for elderly, disabled, and vulnerable people who would otherwise struggle to get to medical appointments, social activities, or even the shops. These services are a lifeline for many, reducing isolation and improving quality of life. Volunteering as a driver is a rewarding way to give back to your community, offering flexible opportunities that fit around your schedule. If you have a little spare time and access to a vehicle, consider joining your local scheme—you could make a huge difference in someone’s life while also meeting new people and becoming part of a supportive network. Check with your local community transport group to find out how you can help today!
